The sand oyster, also known locally as “mapalo”, is one of the natural marine resources that belongs to the bivalve group. In socio-economic terms, the oyster provides family income and is also a source of food (fresh or smoked and dried) in various parts of Mozambique. The shell is used to produce feed, to build houses and to line the streets in local communities.
